Operation Young Vote (OYV) Executive Director Guess Nyirenda has said that the low voter registration turn-out in UPND strongholds could be attributed to voter fatigue. Mr. Nyirenda charged that this is usually what happens in politics if people don’t see positive results after voting. “People in UPND strongholds are fatigued of voting for the UPND and Mr. Hakainde Hichilema because he doesn’t win elections. You can imagine since 2001 they have been voting for the UPND and now they are tired that’s why they didn’t register as voters in huge numbers,” said Mr. Nyirenda. The OYV Executive Director futher charged that the members of Parliament in the UPND strongholds are also to blame because their Constituencies are under-development due their abuse of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). “Another contributing factor to the low registration turn-out in UPND strongholds is the MPs abuse of CDF which they use as their own pocket money leaving their Constituencies under-developed. Why would someone expect people to register as voters in huge numbers when they don’t see any development? the UPND must blame themselves and not ECZ for the low registration turn-out in their strongholds,” Mr. Nyirenda added. OYV also commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) on the manner in which it has conducted the ongoing voter education and registration exercise. Executive director Guess Nyirenda said his organisation was happy with the manner in which the ECZ had handled the voter registration exercise.
