The Mbala Chamber of Commerce and industry says the continued ban on maize and mealie meal exports is affecting farmers’ prospects for growth.
Chamber president Christopher Siame tells Phoenix Business News that the continued ban does not make any business sense especially that most farmers do not get government help in the production of the crop.
Mr Siame says the immediate lifting of the ban is the only solution government can help farmers reap benefits from the readily available markets in neighbouring countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He explains that the trend of banning maize exports does not only hurt farmers but the economy at large.
Government has maintained that the ban on maize exports will only be lifted when the country’s food security is assured.
