The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has empowered 30 women and youth cooperatives in Chipangali district with goats and pigs to venture into livestock rearing. The livestock were handed over by area Member of Parliament Vincent Mwale, who said more livestock will be distributed in the area. Mwale, who is also Housing and Infrastructure Development Minister, said government is empowering cooperatives with livestock in order to widen their income base, as well as improve nutrition at household level. He said the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries has been empowering Cooperatives because of the value that government attaches to improving the lives of its citizenry. Mwale said the handed over livestock which comprised 48 goats and 6 pigs marked the initial phase of the exercise before the Minister in charge rolls out the exercise to the district. Meanwhile, beneficiaries who are mainly women have thanked government for the empowerment. Monica Lungu, who is the treasurer of Kasukusa Cooperative said once multiplied, the livestock will help the women attend to matters like sponsoring children at school.
