Fomer Law association of Zambia President and Executive Director of Chapter One foundation Madam Linda Kasonde has advised UPND Leader Mr. Hakainde Hichilema not to allow his ambitions to turn into a dictator. Madam Kasonde said she believes HH’s concious is not at peace because he too knows that the journey he has embarked on is not Democratic.
“I know Mr. Hichilema and I know what he stands for. He means well for his Party and the Country at large. Intra party democracy is a non-negotiable legal requirement as per our Republican Constitution. Mr. Hichilema must be in the frontline promoting Democratic values by practising free and fair intra party elections and not what we witnessed over the weekend. As Chapter one foundation, we are not in support of what happened. Our advise to him is that he mustn’t allow his ambitions to get the best of him lest he becomes a dictator.” advised Madam Kasonde.
“It’s always dangerous when Politicians start twisting the law to suit their ambitions. This is what we fought against together with the UPND and Mr. Hichilema during the Bill 10 fight and to my surprise, they have done exactly what we were fighting against. The infinity term clause in their Party Constitution autocratic. It might be legal to some extent but it’s just not right. “Life President” is just a fancy word for dictators. My prayer is that Mr. Hichilema searches his soul and changes his mind. Their Constitution like any other is not cast in stone. It’s not too late for them to do the right thing.” She further added.
Madam Kasonde expressed atmost disappoinments that the UPND and Mr. Hakainde Hichilema amended their Party Constitution with the intention of removing the term limits and subsequently grant Mr. Hichilema the powers and freedom to lead the Party for as long as he wishes.
In 2019, Linda Kasonde’s Chapter One Foundation and The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) went to court seeking an order that Minister of Justice Given Lubinda withdrew Bill 10 from the National Assembly because the process of its enactment and proposals did not comply with national values, principles and provisions of our Republican Constitution.
