The Electoral Commission of Zambia-ECZ- has so far registered slightly over 2.7 million voters in the ongoing voter registration exercise against the targeted 9 million.
Zibani Zambia has consistently given the correct update of this number and the last update was yesterday when we reported that ECZ has registered the same number.
And the commission says it has no intention to extend the current voter registration exercise scheduled to end on December 12 2020.
Speaking at a media briefing on the voter registration exercise, which is in the third phase, commission Chief Electoral Officer Patrick Nshidano said the commission has noted concerns raised by stakeholders and has since decided to increase and deploy more voter registration officers and voter registration kits across the country.
Mr Nshindano has said this has been beefed up by extending hours of operation at civic centers across the country and selected registration centers.
Meanwhile, Mr Nshindano said the prisoner voter registration exercise will start after the completion of the current phase.
But responding to Mufumbwe Member of Parliament Elliot Kamondo in parliament during the vice president’s question time this morning, who wanted to know whether there will be consideration to extend the voter registration process in view of the challenges encountered so far, vice president Inonge Wina said the ECZ will analyze the situation after completion.
