Electoral Commission of Zambia will tomorrow Wednesday announce that all candidates filing nominations for 2021 Elections that it shall not accept nominations from candidates with higher academic qualification if they do not first produce a Grade 12 School Certificate or its equivalent, sources have disclosed to Zibani Zambia.

Former Minister of Finance Situmbeko Musokotwane and 53 other serving members of Parliament, who include Ministers, possess G.C.E Certificates which do not meet the Grade 12 School Certificate.

According to the source, the Commission has become under pressure from persons intending to contest elections, led by two Lusaka lawyers, to bar influential competitors without Grade 12  from taking part in elections.

“There is a division among the Commissioners and the legal department on the interpretation of the Constitutional Court. Lawyers are saying the Court did not state whether the higher education should not be accepted as the Constitution only says the Grade 12 is a minimum,” said the source.

Some two lawyers who want to contest elections in Lusaka and Southern Province have been phoning staff at the Commission to push for the Commission to give direction which will eliminate competitors from the August parliamentary race.

According to the source, the Commissioners have since directed only those with Grade 12 Certificates must be allowed to file their nominations.
